– The proposal of the Superior Council of Spanish Architects’ Associations (CSCAE) is endorsed by the Ministry of Public Works and the Madrid City Council.
– It focuses on facilitating the right to housing through the identification, analysis and classification of access difficulties around the world and through the proposal of solutions.
Madrid, 11 June 2019. Madrid will host the first International Union of Architects (UIA) International Forum on Affordable Housing in 2021. Spain’s candidacy, presented by the Superior Council of Spanish Architects’ Associations (CSCAE), with the endorsement of the Ministry of Public Works and the Madrid City Council and personalities such as the former director of UN-Habitat Joan Clos, has beaten the candidancy of Saudi Arabia at the UIA General Assembly, held in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku. It won with 70% of the votes cast.
The Spanish delegation was led by the president of the CSCAE, Lluís Comeron, who, after the triumph of the Spanish candidacy, said: “The UIA International Forum on Affordable Housing will bring together in Spain the best experts to analyse a problem that is worrying the whole world, including our country”.
On the basis that access to housing is a right and has nevertheless become a global problem, the proposal with which the CSCAE has convinced the UIA assembly members focuses on facilitating the fulfilment of this right, which, in the case of Spain, is enshrined in article 47 of the Constitution.
For this purpose, a new methodology is proposed to identify, analyse and classify the main difficulties of access to decent and adequate housing, recognised by international organisations such as the UN, and, with these results and the localisation of some success example from around the world, to propose possible solutions to a challenge of enormous complexity.
The 1st UIA International Forum on Affordable Housing 2021 in Madrid will take place at the headquarters of the Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de Madrid, a landmark venue in the heart of the Spanish capital, whose modernity and multifunctionality allow it to host a large number of side events.
The Spanish proposal is designed to guarantee the participation of citizens as a whole, through the organisation of workshops, exhibitions, conferences and side events, which will also involve cultural centres and foundations.
