THE UIA FORUM 2022 WILL BE CARBON NEUTRAL AFTER MEASURING AND OFFSETTING ALL ITS CO2 EMISSIONS
– The UIA International Forum 2022 “Affordable Housing Activation: Removing Barriers’, in collaboration with ClimateTrade, will promote and help event organisers achieve carbon neutrality through funding in climate mitigation projects
– Holding hybrid online and in-person events around the world will reduce travel, as well as reducing polluting emissions by up to 60%
– The CSCAE, as the organiser, will measure and offset the Carbon Footprint of the Forum that is held in person in Madrid, and will promote similar actions among organisers of the parallel events planned around the world between January and May 2022
– Starting in March, the UIA International Forum 2022 Affordable Housing Activation: Removing Barriers will intensify its work internationally with prior events, and will conclude with the Forum held in Madrid from 18 to 20 May
Madrid, 20 January 2022. The Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE), as the promoter of the UIA International Forum 2022 “Affordable Housing Activation: Removing Barriers”, in collaboration with the digital platform ClimateTrade, world leader in the climate market, as part of the AHA Forum (www.ahamadrid.com) will reduce its CO2 emissions by offsetting equivalent CO2 emissions and help organisers of the parallel events planned between March and May 2022 to also achieve carbon neutrality at the events held by generating an unprecedented campaign to encourage offsetting at all the events promoted through this global movement.
A reduction of up to 60% in polluting emissions
Holding hybrid online and in-person events around the world will reduce travel, as well as reducing by up to 60% the polluting emissions that holding the event in person would entail.
ClimateTrade, a leading Spanish company in digital services for sustainability and carbon markets, will measure and offset the Carbon Footprint of the in-person Forum in Madrid and will promote similar actions among organisers of the parallel events planned between January and May 2022 across all five continents, thereby ensuring that the UIA International Forum 2022 Affordable Housing Activation: Removing Barriers meets the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Angela Balldellou, Executive Director of the AHA Forum, said: “with this initiative, we are going to be able to encourage among organisers of the parallel events, which are promoted internationally, a path towards more sustainable events due to being able to neutralise their carbon footprint. To do this, we will benefit from the collaboration of ClimateTrade, who will make the processes more digital and simpler, opening the door to participating companies and attendees to the world of environmental projects, to which they will be able to contribute directly, without intermediaries.
Lluís Comerón, President of the CSCAE, said: “The AHA Forum intends to contribute to and improve access to decent, adequate housing in the context of the challenges of sustainability and climate emergency in which we live. The event organisation is fully committed to these challenges, and with this agreement, we want to guarantee strict compliance regarding the implementation of the commitment to neutrality in CO2 emissions”
While Francisco Martín, Head of Engineering at ClimateTrade, added: “We are really excited about this new collaboration with the CSCAE, since the main AHA Forum and its parallel events will benefit from the experience that our company has gained in international events and conferences, in the United States, Argentina and Spain, for example.”
An event with broad institutional support
At the General Assembly of the International Union of Architects (UIA), held at the Baku Forum on 11 June 2019, the choice of Madrid for the organisation of the UIA International Forum 2022 on access to housing was approved by a large majority. The candidacy was successful thanks to the widespread institutional support that the project has, which is backed by the Government of Spain through the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda, the Community of Madrid and the City Council of Madrid, and benefits from the collaboration of UN-Habitat.
The UIA International Forum 2022 was designed with the aim of making a significant contribution to improving and facilitating access to affordable, decent and adequate housing worldwide. To do this, the forum organisation has the highest level of support of organisations, governments, entities and institutions; in order to specifically address the barriers that hinder access to housing through knowledge and needs analysis in the field of accessibility, and achieve, in the context of housing, the 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals based on information and shared data and knowledge.
The UIA International Forum 2022 will be opened from January with parallel activities held around the world and with prior international events held from March, culminating in Madrid from 18 to 20 May at an event that will bring together international experts in the fields of architecture, engineering, the economy, urban planning, the environment, sociology, design, science and art.
The support of the professional world in Madrid is guaranteed through the COAM, as is that of the construction industry through the 2030 Observatory of the CSCAE, which brings together all relevant stakeholders in city design in Spain.
