After decades of privatization, the Hungarian social housing stock is small by Western European standards, but the need for affordable housing is great.

In Germany, private renters can join a tenants’ association, called a Mieterbund or Mietervereine. These represent tenants’ interests and offer members advice on tenancy contracts, utility costs and tenancy laws.

Owner-occupied artists’ workshops and apartments, cooperative housing and studios, space provision for social associations and commerce were part of the programme, which would establish a new building group and hence lay the foundation for the residential and studio building at the former Berlin flower market.

In revitalising and adding further floors to the sixteen century building we wanted to show that continuing building in the city is a responsible way can be successful not just in aesthetic terms but also socially and economically. For us, this project is a passion, experiment and space for life.

Revolving funds are a strong catalyst of energy-efficiency renovation in several countries. While they function in different ways, the general idea is that they provide low-interest loans to qualified owners and developers constructing and/or renovating (affordable) housing units.

Right-of-occupancy housing [1] is a mix of renting and homeownership. Under this model the occupier must first pay a right-of-occupancy payment, generally amounting to 15 per cent of the purchase price.

The building is located in a densely populated area of the 19th arrondisement in Paris. The building, with a rectangle general shape, can be thought of as a mass built to fit into the existing urban fabric on its outside perimeter while its center has been "carved out" to accommodate an interior green space.
